While Steve Berger reportedly stepped down from the Elder Board of Grace Chapel in 2021, he's been releasing sermons across his website and social media channels.
His most recent sermon was released on October 5, 2023. In it, he's very clear that people have been talking about him, though he never once addresses the issue.
Instead, he talked around everything being said about him and chose to chastise the church for believing lies about him.
There's not a lot of substance here, since he's talking around all of the complaints that he:
Failed to report child abuse
Failed to answer Grant Solomon’s cry for help in 2018
Tried to intimidate Grant, Gracie, and Angie Solomon through his “Kavanaugh” sermon after Gracie said she'd been raped
Lied about his meeting with Grant at Grant's memorial service
Protected Aaron Solomon and threatened to sue local media outlets if they touched his buddy
Encouraged his followers to pray curses of destruction over their enemies, like Angie, Gracie, and their supporters (including myself)
Welcomed Aaron Solomon to one of those curse videos
Threatened to sue me in 2021 if I didn't take down my supposedly defamatory first story about Gracie and Grant
Participated in the harassment and set up of George Brewer
That's a shortlist, but I think you get the idea.
There were several bizarre moments, but here are a few things that stuck out to me.
If you can stomach to listen to the whole thing, or if you can stomach to simply flip through the transcript, you'll notice that Pastor Steve repeatedly used “loins” and “reproduction” as a euphemism for the truth,
Gross.
And he made sure to point out that social media truth is not really the truth.
Very nice, Steve.
It's *not* weird at all how your denials never contain substance, but instead just demonize your “enemies,” aka the people who want justice for Grant.
I'm sorry that accountability is uncomfortable?
Our friend Lindsay also made a nice video to address something that keeps coming up:
Women are frequently underestimated and dismissed with labels like “crazy” or “demonic.”
Check out her reel below.
I think she's right —Aaron, Steve, and their buddies shouldn't underestimate what we can do.
It's been a bit more stressful around here. While Aaron’s allies have been more active and threatening this week on social media, a lot of so-called supporters have been clutching their pearls over content from Lindsay and myself because (apparently) we are not the conservative Christian voices they'd like us to be.
Oh well? We also never pretended to be what those people wanted.
Meanwhile, I've spent much of the weekend in research mode. Today I went through a ton of newspaper archives about Steve, Aaron, and Calvary Chapel (where Steve got his start in California).
There's much more work to be done and many more stories to publish, so I'm working as fast as I can.
For now, I just wanted to update you on Berger’s sermon because it gives an interesting look into his refusal to take accountability for his misdeeds as a pastor, and his harm to Gracie and Grant.
Keep at these people, Shannon. Congrats on the promotion to Jessica's site as well.
